Autumn begins

Today - Wednesday 23rd September-  is the first day of autumn, the autumnal equinox today means that there are the same number of hours of daylight and darkness, so from tomorrow the dark nights and mornings begin to creep in. What to do? My option is to find a cosy spot and read! Below are a few 'autumnal' books to find in the Library:

Roald Dahl Day

The world famous author Roald Dahl was born on the 13th September 1916 and thus every year the  13th of September is Roald Dahl Day. We will be celebrating in school on Monday 14th. Look out for Roald Dahl quotes around the school and other Roald Dahl activities.
Why not follow this advice and borrow a book from the Library?

More information available at the Roald Dahl  website or from the Roald Dahl Day blog

Student book review

My favourite book is 'Attack of the giant robot chickens' by Alex McCall. It is set in Aberdeen and is about a group of kids trying to save the city from attack by robotic chickens! All of the adults have vanished and only Jesse and his friends remain to save the world.

I like this book because it is a great adventure and has lots of really bad chicken and egg puns which are funny. I have just borrowed the next book in the series -  'Revenge of the giant robot chickens' - from the Library and I am looking forward to reading it.   S1 Reviewer

Teen Book Review

I have just finished reading "Buried thunder" by Tim Bowler. It is about a girl called Maya whose family has just taken over a hotel in a small village. One evening she wanders into the nearby forest and makes a terrible discovery - she finds two bodies. But all is not as it seems and Maya can only tell the police that she was drawn to that spot by the eyes of a fox. And this mysterious fox will not leave her alone. Maya hears it scratching round the hotel and sees it watching her outside, but no-one believes her. What is really happening? Will Maya solve the mystery before anyone else dies?

I really enjoyed this book although it is similar to many other creepy house type books and you can probably work out what the outcome will be. It is enjoyable because it is well written and the author really draws you in to the story from the very first page. It is quite atmospheric but not too scary. I would rate it 7 out of 10!   S4 Reader

Welcome Back!

Welcome back everyone. I hope you had a good summer holiday. Come along to the Library and see if you can spot some of the changes that have been made to the layout over the summer!

All S1 students have been added to the Library system and can start to borrow books as soon as they have had their Library introduction.

Remember, if in doubt ask! Mrs Aitken is happy to answer any questions you may have about the Library, books and reading.

Student Book Review

'The Wells bequest' is an amazing book by Polly Shulman, it's a romantic comedy with a tone of action and excitement packed within the pages. this is the sequel to 'The Grimm legacy', another amazing piece by Polly Shulman. 'The Wells bequest' will always leave you wanting more.

Leo Novikov is part of an extremely science related family, so when a strange machine appears in his room from the future with what looks like a smaller version of him with his arms wrapped around the hottest girls he's ever seen, he is surprised.
Leo goes to the New York Circulating Material Repository to do research for his robot based work, this is where he meets Jaya, 'the future girl'! The two embark on an awesome crusade through time to save New York from an evil death ray. Will Jaya and Leo manage to save New York in time?

I really enjoyed reading this book and I really want to read more by this author. i hope others enjoy this book as much as I have, and I will certainly be reading this again.  5 stars.  CA S2

Fiction Genres

The displays in the Library focus on the wide variety of fiction genres available in the Library. Many you will be familiar with such as horror, romance, fantasy and thriller; some you might not be so aware of, for example - dystopia, myths, science fiction and realistic fiction. See if you can find a book that matches your requirements, however specific!

Terry Pratchett 1948-2015

Sad news, the death of Sir Terry Pratchett author of some of the most amusing and imaginative fantasy fiction. If you have never read one of his Discworld novels why not borrow one from the Library. There are some amazingly inventive characters including the Librarian (an orang utan) - my favourite of course and Death!

'And Death said: "AT LAST SIR TERRY WE MUST WALK TOGETHER." Terry took Death's arm and followed him through the doors and on to the black desert under the endless night. The end."'

Holocaust Memorial Day

Every year on the 27th of January, the date of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp at the end of WW2, the world remembers all of those who have been affected by acts of genocide whether in the concentration camps or during conflicts in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia or Darfur. The theme for HMD 2015 is 'Keep the memory alive'. There is a display in the Library to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.

Sunday 25th January is Burns Night. The Library has a selection of books about Robert Burns and  how to organise a Burns supper as well a books of the Bard's poetry. Everything you need to celebrate the birth of Scotland's most famous poet can be found in the Library (well, except for the haggis...and the bagpipes!)
