Valentine's Day

Love is in the air as February 14th approaches. If you need a little romance in your life, why not visit the Library (F21) and check out the displays of pink and fluffy romance novels?

If romance is not your thing then Mrs Aitken is happy to recommend other fiction genres that may be of more interest to you.

Remember there is a week long half-term holiday coming up and you might want to stock up on some reading material in case the weather continues to be inclement!!

Valentine's Day

Sunday 14th February is Valentine's Day a day to celebrate love and romance. There are many, many romantic fiction books to read some happy, some sad, depending on your preference. A few examples are given below.

Daily reading Challenge

How are you getting on with the Reading Challenges? I hope you are trying one or two and finding that it helps get you back into reading mode. Today, find a book you haven't read before that you have in your home. How many pages does it have? Work out what page number is roughly one third (1/3) of the way through the book. Go to that page and read it and maybe the next one. What do you think happened before this part of the story? What do you think will happen next?? Does this make you want to read the whole book?
My book is 'Only mostly devastated' by Sophie Gonzales. It has 278 pages. So page 92 is roughly 1/3 of the way through. It is about two teenage boys who seem to have fallen out at a party and one is trying to apologize to the other, who reluctantly accepts. However all is not well between them yet as the next scene takes place in school and Ollie is definitely unhappy when Will turns up in his music class! I am a sucker for a romance with a bit of angst, and it seems like an easy, fun read with lots of dialogue. Conclusion = I will read the book!! Starting today, out in the garden while the sun shines!

Student Book Review

'The Wells bequest' is an amazing book by Polly Shulman, it's a romantic comedy with a tone of action and excitement packed within the pages. this is the sequel to 'The Grimm legacy', another amazing piece by Polly Shulman. 'The Wells bequest' will always leave you wanting more.

Leo Novikov is part of an extremely science related family, so when a strange machine appears in his room from the future with what looks like a smaller version of him with his arms wrapped around the hottest girls he's ever seen, he is surprised.
Leo goes to the New York Circulating Material Repository to do research for his robot based work, this is where he meets Jaya, 'the future girl'! The two embark on an awesome crusade through time to save New York from an evil death ray. Will Jaya and Leo manage to save New York in time?

I really enjoyed reading this book and I really want to read more by this author. i hope others enjoy this book as much as I have, and I will certainly be reading this again.  5 stars.  CA S2

Book of the week 16th June

Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell is this week's Book of the Week.
From the blurb:
"Eleanor is the new girl in town, and with her chaotic family life, her mismatched clothes and unruly red hair, she couldn't stick out more if she tried.
Park is the boy at the back of the bus. Black tee-shirts, headphones, head in a book - he thinks he's made himself invisible. But not to Eleanor...never to Eleanor.
Slowly, steadily through late-night conversations and an ever growing stack of mix tapes, Eleanor and Park fall for each other. They fall in love the way you do the first time, when you're young, and you feel as if you have nothing and everything to lose."

The bride's farewell by Meg Rosoff is one of a number of books on display throughout the Library united by the theme 'Journeys'. The bride's farewell is a beautifully written historical novel set in the 1850s in the area around Salisbury. On the morning of her wedding Pell Ridley rides out of her village on her horse -Jack- accompanied by her mute brother Bean. Their journey takes them on an adventure, through good times and bad, until they all find their rightful place in the world. I really adored this book, the characters are beautifully imagined - even the horse, Jack and Dicken the dog. The countryside and the poverty of the time are well described and Pell's family story is both shocking and moving.
