My daily reading challenge

Accepting my own challenge I decided to read the first and last chapters of 'Mortal Engines' by Philip Reeve. It has been a few years since I read it although I saw the movie a couple of months ago. Forgot how much I enjoyed the book and may read the whole novel again. I do remember being drawn in by the first sentence:
 "It was a dark blustery afternoon in spring, and the city of London was chasing a small mining town across the dried-out bed of the old North Sea."
Intriguing!
This is a brilliant dystopian/steampunk adventure story where cities move across the globe on caterpillar tracks hunting each other for power, resources and supplies. The heroes Tom Natsworthy and Hester Shaw are brave and resourceful as they need to be against their enemies the Stalkers and Shrike in particular. This is a thrilling fast-paced adventure which is thoroughly enjoyable.

Book of the week - 6th May

As it is a short school week I thought we might just use one of my favourite books EVER as book of the week. It is the wonderous steampunk novel 'Mortal engines' by Philip Reeve. If you have not read any of the series then why not start with this one - the first and best! If you love fantasy or science fiction then you are bound to enjoy 'Mortal engines'. Even if you don't think that you like these genres this book is worth trying, it worked for me. It was one of the first "steampunk" novels I ever read and it had me hooked from the opening line - "It was a dark, blustery afternoon in spring, and the city of London was chasing a small mining town across the dried-out bed of the old North Sea." How could you fail to want to read on?? A thrilling read with great characters both good and bad (Tom and Hester are the heroes and Shrike is one scary baddie!) Let me know what you think!

Mortal Engine series

You don't have to have been coming into the Library for long to find out that Philip Reeve is one of my favourite authors. In particular I love his Mortal Engines series. If you too have read the books from Mortal Engines to A Darkling Plain, why not read Fever Crumb the prequel to Mortal Engines?

Fever Crumb is set a generation before Mortal Engines and explains the origins of the traction cities and of the character the stalker Shrike. It is an exciting adventure which is also peppered with humour - look out for the cult that worships "Hari Potter"!!

Fever Crumb can be read without having read any of the other books. The series is of a genre known as "steampunk" this refers to books set in an age when steam power was still widely used, often the Victorian era, but features futuristic inventions and ideas.
