Remembrance

Every year on the 11th of November Remembrance Day is held in the United Kingdom as a day to commemorate the contribution of British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women in the two World Wars and later conflicts. The Library in F27 has a display of non-fiction books which give information about the choice of 11th November for this commemoration and the significance of the poopy as a symbol of remembrance.

There is also a selection of war themed fiction books on display. All books on display are available for borrowing.

Daily reading Challenge

Thursday
Today for the Reading Challenge find a non-fiction (information) book or website and either read the first chapter.
Or.
Remind yourself of the layout of an information book: contents page, chapters, glossary, bibliography and index. Does the website you are looking at have a similar arrangement.
What about the features of your book/website? Does it have: maps, a timeline, photographs, diagrams, a cross section, tables, fact boxes? What other features does your book/website use to illustrate the information?

I am going to read the first chapter of:
and I know I will probably look through the book to see what features are used to enhance the information.

Flip Side

You may not have noticed, but the latest issue of FlipSide is also the LAST EVER issue because the IET (Institute of Engineering and Technology) have decided to close the magazine.  However there are still all the back issues available to enjoy, but I know we will all miss this amazing magazine.

In this month's issue you can find out about : whether chimps are actually clever enough to take over the planet; forensic science; how to get a job in games and reconstructing dinosaurs. You will also find all the usual amazing and weird photographs (including a photo feature entitled "animals eating each other")!; game, book and music  reviews.

DON'T MISS THE LAST EVER ISSUE!

S1 Posters

A s part of the S1 Information Skills Course students had to research an animal found in the rainforest and produce a poster with a hand-drawn picture and ten facts about their chosen animal. Some of the fantastic results are displayed in the Library.

FlipSide

The new issue of FlipSide is now available in the Library. As usual it is packed full of interesting articles, fascinating facts and stunning pictures. One of the main articles is about shark attacks, something which both fascinates and horrifies at the same time. You will find this month's issues on the issue desk.

To celebrate the Chinese Year of the Dragon which begins on Monday 23rd of January there is a display in the Library. The display has non-fiction books about China - geography, history, cookery, wildlife etc. There are also many fiction books which are either set in China or are fantasy books about dragons on display.

If you were born in the year 2000 then you were born in the last year of the dragon, see if you match the characteristics of a dragon according to the Chinese zodiac.

There will be lots of Chinese New Year puzzles to do in the Library on Monday.

The new display in the Library this week highlights books featuring wolves. There is a mixture of fact and fiction all about wolves - good wolves, bad wolves, prehistoric wolves and the last Scottish wolf. If you find wolves as fascinating as I do, why not come along and borrow one of the books?
