February is LGBT+ History Month. Visit the website for resources, free downloads, interviews and much more.
Throughout February BBC Sport will be celebrating the many achievements of LGBT+ athletes and their impact both in their chosen sport and in the wider world.
The BBC also have a fascinating article on six LGBT+ sportspeople from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries that we may not have heard of but should really know more about them and their legacy. Read the article here
Holocaust Memorial Day
We will continue to do our bit for as long as we can, secure in the knowledge that others will continue to light a candle long after us.
- Gena Turgel MBE, survivor of the Holocaust (1923-2018)
The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) 2021 is Be the light in the darkness. It encourages everyone to reflect on the depths humanity can sink to, but also the ways individuals and communities resisted that darkness to ‘be the light’ before, during and after genocide.
West Lothian History
BBC 2 programme 'Scotland's first oil rush' presented by Professor Iain Stewart told the story of the shale oil industry in West Lothian. West Lothian was the home of the world's first true 'oil rush' when James "Paraffin" Young developed a process which refined lighting fuel from shale. As a result of this discovery West Lothian became the centre of the shale oil industry for nearly one hundred years and saw the population of the region boom. The huge success of the industry was not without it's tragedies - in 1947 an explosion at the Burngrange mine near West Calder saw the loss of 15 men.
If you would like to know about this period in the history of west Lothian copies of 'Shale voices' by Alasdair Findlay (who featured in the programme) are available for loan from the School Library.
