Halloween

It will soon be Halloween and you can find lots of spooky and scary reads in the Library. Come along and select something from the displays in the Library in room F27.

Halloween Horrors

There are lots of spooky books available in the Library to cater for all tastes over the Halloween period. There is everything from ghost stories, horror fiction through spooky joke books, art books to help you create your own eerie characters and books about the paranormal!

If you are not afraid of spiders you can reach through the giant web to borrow one of the books from the display.

Display for Halloween

As the nights grow ever longer and darker and the weather becomes colder and wetter what could be better than to sit indoors and read a lovely, long... horror story!!
Celebrate Halloween by choosing from the many horror books on display around the Library. If you are not afraid of spiders you could even borrow one from the shelves beneath the display board! So, 'Don't be a scaredy cat.. read some horror!!'

Halloween Display

This year's Halloween Display is based on a rhyme I remember from way back when I was at primary school. There are lots of horror and ghost stories on display throughout the Library as well, so plenty to scare you during the long, dark autumn evenings!

It's Halloween and witches fly

On their broonsticks through the sky

Each is wearing a pokey hat

And each has got a big black cat!

Black October

In October as the nights get darker thoughts start to turn to all things "Halloween". The display in the fiction section this month focuses on books which are scary, or frightening,  and which, by coincidence, have predominantly black book jackets! So if you want something creepy or ghostly to read come along to the Library and see the selection of books on display.

Book of the week - 9th September

Book of the week this week is 'Gravenhunger' by Harriet Goodwin - a terrifying adventure story. The blurb on the back cover reads:
"Phoenix gasped. How could she have kept a place like this a secret? It was huge. Four storeys of dark grey stone glowering down at them through a multitude of mullioned windows...The sun had disappeared behind a dense bank of cloud - and above the towering chimneys of Gravenhunger Manor a thin grey rain was falling."
"Gravenhunger Manor isn't the only secret Pheonix's mother took with her to the grave. Something terrible happened at the house during her childhood, something for which she never forgave herself. Pheonix is determined to uncover the truth, but as he begins to dig up the past, he finds himself in mortal danger..."

This book is a wonderfully atmospheric, mysterious adventure which will keep you turning the pages right up until the end.

Book of the week - 11th June

This week's Book of the week is 'Daylight saving' by Edward Hogan. Daniel is overweight and hates sport so when his father tells him thay are spending a week togather at the Leisure World Holiday Complex Daniel is not impressed! They arrive at the complex and Daniel sees a girl in the path of the buggy taking them to their cabin. Daniel grabs the steering wheel and diverts it, but the girl is nowhere to be seen. Daniel sees her later swimming in the lake. Her name is Lexi and she is smart and funny but rather secretive. Then, Daniel realises that each time they meet Lexi's bruises seem worse and her watch appears to be going backwards. The pair are being stalked by a mysterious figure and, as the end of British Summer Time looms Daniel discovers he has to act quickly - to save their souls! An excellent read!
Tag line from the book jacket "Can you save someone from something that's already happened?"

Book of the week - 3rd June

'Shiverton Hall' by Emerald Fennell is the book of the week this week. Shiverton Hall is a school with a distinctly creepy history but when Arthur Bannister is unexpectedly offered a place with all expenses paid he has no option but to accept  - to the delight of his parents. Although many of the students are friendly there are some who are most certainly not! As for the Headmistress it seems to be her mission in life to make Arthur's time at the school as miserable as possible. Add to that the ghosts and the Shiverton curse and you have the makings of a very eerie story.
