Book of the week- 16th September

Book of the week - 9th September

Book of the week this week is 'Gravenhunger' by Harriet Goodwin - a terrifying adventure story. The blurb on the back cover reads:
 "Phoenix gasped. How could she have kept a place like this a secret? It was huge. Four storeys of dark grey stone glowering down at them through a multitude of mullioned windows...The sun had disappeared behind a dense bank of cloud - and above the towering chimneys of Gravenhunger Manor a thin grey rain was falling."

This book is a wonderfully atmospheric, mysterious adventure which will keep you turning the pages right up until the end.

Book of the week - 11th June

This week's Book of the week is 'Daylight saving' by Edward Hogan. Daniel is overweight and hates sport so when his father tells him thay are spending a week togather at the Leisure World Holiday Complex Daniel is not impressed! They arrive at the complex and Daniel sees a girl in the path of the buggy taking them to their cabin. Daniel grabs the steering wheel and diverts it, but the girl is nowhere to be seen. Daniel sees her later swimming in the lake. Her name is Lexi and she is smart and funny but rather secretive. Then, Daniel realises that each time they meet Lexi's bruises seem worse and her watch appears to be going backwards. The pair are being stalked by a mysterious figure and, as the end of British Summer Time looms Daniel discovers he has to act quickly - to save their souls! An excellent read!

Book of the week - 3rd June

'Shiverton Hall' by Emerald Fennell is the book of the week this week. Shiverton Hall is a school with a distinctly creepy history but when Arthur Bannister is unexpectedly offered a place with all expenses paid he has no option but to accept  - to the delight of his parents. Although many of the students are friendly there are some who are most certainly not! As for the Headmistress it seems to be her mission in life to make Arthur's time at the school as miserable as possible. Add to that the ghosts and the Shiverton curse and you have the makings of a very eerie story.

The 39 Clues series - various authors
The 39 clues is a sensitively written series about two orphans (Amy and Dan Cahill) who embark on an adventure to find the 39 clues and become the most powerful in the world. There are many obstacles along the way and the four branches will stop at nothing to win.  Along the way the orphans discover some of the most famous people in history were Cahills. They come close to finding the truth about their parents and what branch they belong to.

 This series is written by different authors but continues along the same lines. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves action-packed mystery books. There are 11 books in the series, each with an exciting new plot. The cover might be a bit misleading and some wouldn't get a second glance, but it really does prove the point - don't judge a book by its cover.  By NL
