The Book of the Month for October is 'A kind of spark' by Elle McNicoll. The story is told through the voice of Addie who is autistic. On a school trip Addie learns about the history of witch trials in her town. Women were persecuted and executed as 'witches' because they were different from everyone else. Addie understands the hurt and hardships of being seen as different. She decides to campaign for a memorial to these forgotten women and hopes that she can also challenge the way people see her.
This is a beautifully written story about courage and friendship and about the highs and lows of being seen as 'different'.
